Add a Tag¶
Create a tag to categorize and prioritize your data assets. Once created, the tag can be applied to datastores, containers, fields, checks, and anomalies.
Permission Required
You need the Manager role or above to create tags. See Tags Overview for the full permission matrix.
Field reference¶
The Add Tag form shows the following fields. A Preview at the top shows how the tag badge will look as you fill them in.

Tag names are unique
A tag cannot share its name with any existing tag, including External tags imported from a data catalog. If the name is taken, Save fails with a message saying the tag name already exists. Pick another name, or apply the existing tag instead.
The check is case-sensitive: PII and pii count as different names, so both can exist. Search the Tags list before creating a tag to avoid near-duplicates.
Allowed characters
Accented letters (é, ã, ç) and other symbols (%, /, &) are not accepted, so a name like Résumé Data or PII/PCI is rejected. Use Resume Data or PII-PCI instead. The same rules apply when creating tags through the API, where names can be up to 255 characters. The form keeps names to 40 characters so they fit inline in the tag list and badges. Datastore group names follow the same character rules.
Create a Tag From a Tag Picker¶
You can also create a tag without leaving the page you are on. Wherever you pick tags, such as a check form, a bulk edit, the tags of an anomaly or a field, or the Explore filters, users with the Manager role or above see an Add tag icon next to the search box at the top of the tag picker. Click it to open the same form, fill it in, and click Save. When the catalog has no tags yet, the search row becomes a full-width Add tag button and the list shows No tags yet. A search with no match keeps the icon and shows No tags found. Users without permission to create tags see neither button, only the message.
After you save:
- The new tag is pinned to the top of the picker, newest first, above the tags already selected, and marked with a icon (Just created on hover).
- The new tag is not selected for you. Click it in the list to apply it.
- Closing and reopening the picker keeps the pins. They clear once you close the form or leave the page, and the list returns to its usual order, with the selected tags first.
Tags created from the Tags page are not pinned in any picker.
Steps¶
Step 1: Navigate to the Tags page by clicking Tags on the left side panel.
Step 2: Click Add Tag in the top right corner. The Add Tag form opens.
Step 3: Fill in the fields. Save stays disabled until Name and Color are set.
Step 4: Click Save. A success message confirms that the tag was created, and it appears in the Tags list.
