Bulk Edit Fields

Use this flow to change many fields of a table or file at once. To change many tables or files of a datastore, see Bulk Edit Tables and Files. For the platform-level tag catalog and how tags reach the checks of a field, see Tags and Tag Inheritance.

Permissions

Bulk editing fields requires the Editor team permission (or higher) on the datastore. See Team Permissions.

What You Can Change

The Bulk Edit Fields dialog offers the options below. Each option you turn on shows how it is applied next to its name.

Option How it is applied
Tags Overwrite (the default) replaces each field's tags with the ones you pick; tags that are not in your selection are removed, except external tags imported from a data catalog, which stay. Add keeps each field's current tags and adds the ones you pick, without duplicating a tag it already has.

Note

With Overwrite and no tag picked, Save removes every tag from the selected fields, apart from external tags. To leave an option as it is, turn its toggle off; Save stays disabled while every option is off.

To make the same change through the API, see the bulk field update in the Field Status API, which takes tags with tags_mode.

Other Bulk Actions

The same Bulk menu offers more actions for the selected fields, depending on the tab and on what is selected. Each one opens its own flow:

Action When it appears See
Mask On the Active tab, or on All when every selected field is active Mask a Field
Unmask On the Masked tab, or on All when every selected field is masked Unmask a Field
Exclude On the Active and Masked tabs, or on All when every selected field is active or masked; not for computed fields Exclude a Field
Restore On the Excluded tab Restore a Field
Promote When the selection includes a computed field created on this table or file; available only when every selected field is one. Computed fields inherited from another table or file are promoted from there Promote Computed Fields
Delete On the Missing tab, or on any tab when every selected field is a computed field Delete a Field

Steps

Step 1: Open the table or file and go to its Fields tab.

Step 2: Pick the All, Active, or Masked status tab. The Missing and Excluded tabs do not offer Edit.

Step 3: Hover over each field you want to change and click the checkbox on its row. To select every field on the current page, click the Select all in page checkbox. The top of the list turns into a selection toolbar showing the count, for example 4 selected.

Step 4: Click the Bulk menu button in the selection toolbar.

Step 5: Click Edit in the menu.

Step 6: The Bulk Edit Fields dialog opens. The Tags option is already on, with Overwrite selected, and the notice at the top reads This action will overwrite Tags for followed by the number of selected fields.

Step 7: Set each option you want to change:

  • Tags: keep Overwrite, or click Add to keep each field's current tags. Click the tag field and pick the tags to apply; they appear as chips in the field.

Hover over Overwrite or Add to see what each one does. The notice updates with your choice, for example This action will add to the existing Tags for 4 selected fields.

Step 8: Click Save. Every selected field is updated, and a success message appears.
