Add a Tag

Create a tag to categorize and prioritize your data assets. Once created, the tag can be applied to datastores, tables and files, fields, checks, check templates, and anomalies. You can create a tag from the Tags list, from any tag picker without leaving the asset you are tagging, or from the command palette. All three open the same form.

Permission Required

Admins create any tag. Other users create tags only for teams where their team holds the Editor team permission, other than the Public team. See Tag Permissions for the full permission matrix.

Field Reference

The Add Tag form shows the following fields. A Preview at the top shows how the tag badge will look as you fill them in.

Field Required Type Description
Scope Select Who can find and apply the tag. Global opens it to everyone and is offered to Admins only. A team limits it to that team's members and to the datastores assigned to the team. Non-Admins see the teams where they hold Editor. See Team Tags.
Name Text The tag's name, from 2 to 255 characters, with at least one letter. A counter under the field shows how many you have used. Only unaccented letters (A–Z), digits, spaces, underscores (_), hyphens (-), and periods (.) are allowed. Spaces at the start and end are removed.
Color Color The badge color as a hex code. A random color is filled in for you. Click to pick one of the Color Presets or any color in the Color Picker, or click to draw another random color.
Description Text Explains what the tag means.
Category Text Groups related tags. Pick an existing category, or type a new one and press Enter to add it.
Weight Modifier Number From -10 to 10, 1 by default. Increases the weight of every asset that carries the tag, and of its children, by this amount. Negative values decrease it. It also raises or lowers the Importance of the checks that carry the tag. See Tag Weight Modifier.

Tag names are unique

A tag cannot share its name with any existing tag, including External tags imported from a data catalog and other teams' tags you can't see. If the name is taken, Save fails with a message saying the tag name already exists. Pick another name, or apply the existing tag instead.

The check is case-sensitive: PII and pii count as different names, so both can exist. Search the Tags list before creating a tag to avoid near-duplicates.

Allowed characters

Accented letters (é, ã, ç) and other symbols (%, /, &) are not accepted, so a name like Résumé Data or PII/PCI is rejected. Use Resume Data or PII-PCI instead. Datastore group names follow the same character rules. For the rules that apply through the API, see Create a Tag.

Steps

Pick the tab for where you start.

Step 1: Click Tags on the left side panel. The Tags list opens.

Step 2: Click Add Tag in the top right corner, or press T. The Add Tag form opens.

Step 3: Fill in the fields described in the Field Reference. Save stays disabled until Name and Color are set.

Step 4: Click Save. A success message appears, and the tag shows in the Tags list.

Use this to create a tag while you tag an asset, for example in a check form, a bulk edit, the tags of an anomaly or a field, or the Explore filters.

Step 1: Open the tag picker of the asset or filter.

Step 2: Click Add tag next to the search box at the top of the picker. When there are no tags yet, the search row is a full-width Add tag button instead. The Add Tag form opens.

Step 3: Fill in the fields described in the Field Reference.

Step 4: Click Save. The new tag is pinned to the top of its section in the picker (Global or its team), above the tags already selected, and marked with a icon (Just created on hover).

Step 5: Click the new tag in the list to apply it. It is not selected for you.

The pins stay while you close and reopen the picker, and clear once you close the form or leave the page. If you don't see the Add tag button, you can't create tags, and a search with no match only shows No tags found.

Step 1: Press Cmd+KCtrl+K to open the command palette.

Step 2: Type tag and select Add new tag.... The Add Tag form opens.

Step 3: Fill in the fields described in the Field Reference.

Step 4: Click Save. A success message appears, and the tag shows in the Tags list.
