Edit a Tag¶
Change a tag's name, color, description, category, weight, or scope. The change shows on every asset that carries the tag. You can edit a tag from the Tags list, from the tag's page, or from the command palette. All three open the same Edit Tag form.

Permission Required
Admins edit any tag. Other users edit the tags of teams where their team holds the Editor team permission. Only Admins change a tag's Scope, and the category and weight of an external tag. See Tag Permissions.
What Can Stop an Edit¶
| Situation | What you see |
|---|---|
| You don't manage the tag | Edit is not offered. Global and Public tags are managed by Admins, and a team's tags by Admins and the users whose team holds the Editor team permission. |
| You are not an Admin | The Scope field is locked. Only Admins move a tag between global and a team, or between teams. |
| The tag is an external tag | Scope, Name, Color, and Description are locked, because the data catalog owns them. Only Category and Weight Modifier can change. |
| Name or Color is empty | Save stays off until both are set. |
| The new name breaks the name rules | The field shows what to fix, such as Use at least 2 characters. See the Add a Tag field reference. |
| The new name is already taken | Save fails with a message saying the tag name already exists, even when the other tag belongs to a team you can't see. |
| Restricting the scope removes the tag from assets | Save stays off until you review those assets and confirm. If the form can't load them, it shows Unable to check which assets lose this tag with a Retry button, and Save stays off. |
What Changes on the Tagged Assets¶
Every asset points at the same tag, so an edit reaches all of them at once. Nothing is added to or removed from an asset, except when you restrict the scope.
| What you change | What happens to the assets, Flows, and filters that use the tag |
|---|---|
| Name | The new name shows on every asset that carries the tag, and in the Flows and filters that use it. |
| Color, Description, or Category | Shows everywhere right away. Nothing else changes. |
| Weight Modifier | The importance of the tagged checks, and the impact of their open anomalies, update in the background. The weights of the tagged tables and fields, which quality scores use, are not recalculated by a weight edit. See When Weights Are Recalculated. |
| Scope, from a team to Global | Nothing is removed. Every user can now find and apply the tag. |
| Scope, to a team | The tag is removed from every asset outside the team's datastores, archived ones included, and from check templates. Flows that filter on the tag keep it. |
Every edit is recorded in the tag's timeline. See Changing a Tag.
Steps¶
The scope review in each tab applies only when you restrict the Scope to a team.
Restricting the scope removes the tag
Saving removes the tag from every asset the team can't access, archived ones included. Making the tag global again later does not put it back. See Changing a Tag's Scope.
