Add a Downstream Connection
This guide walks you through the steps to add a downstream connection from a container. The new connection is manual and will not be modified by data catalog syncs or Qualytics managed detection.
Note
You need the Manager role to add a lineage connection. Users with the Member role can view the graph but cannot create connections.
Info
You can start this flow from the focal node (the container highlighted in the middle of the graph) or from any downstream leaf node at the right edge of the canvas. The steps are the same in both cases; adding from a leaf lets you extend the chain further downstream from that point without changing the focal container.
Steps
Pick the tab that matches the granularity you want and follow the steps below. The first two steps are the same in both flows; the connection type is chosen inside the Add menu.
Use this flow when the focal container feeds an entire downstream container.
Step 1: On the focal node, click the Add downstream button on the right side of the node.

Note
The Add downstream button only appears on the focal container and nodes that are downstream of it. If the button is not visible on a node, open that container to make it the focal container and try again.
Step 2: The Add downstream dialog opens. The current container is pre-filled in the Upstream section, and the Table mode is active by default.

Step 3: Confirm that Table is the active mode.

Step 4: In the Downstream section, select the datastore and then the target container that the focal container feeds into. You can pick a container in the same datastore or in any other datastore your team has access to.

Step 5: Click Add.

Step 6: The new downstream container appears in the graph and the canvas re-centers on the newly connected node.

Use this flow when only a specific field from the focal container feeds a downstream container.

The current container is pre-filled in the Upstream section.

Step 3: Switch to the Field mode.

Step 4: Pick the focal container's field at the top and the downstream field at the bottom. Each side has its own datastore and container selector, so the two endpoints can live in different containers and different datastores.

Step 5: Click Add.

Step 6: The new field-level connection appears, and the canvas re-centers on the newly connected field.

Note
When the source and target fields belong to different containers, Qualytics also creates a container-level connection between those containers if one does not already exist. After saving, you will see both the field-level connection and the container-level connection in the graph.
Tip
You can also right-click any field in the expanded field list and choose Add downstream. This opens the dialog directly on the Field tab with the clicked field already selected, skipping steps 3 and 4.
